But First: TikTok’s Brief Background

TikTok is a social media app where the point of the app is to entertain other users as well as get a community going. You do this by posting videos that can be between 15 seconds to 3 minutes long, interacting with other users, and just having a good time. There are filters, you can upload yourself doing a dance, singing a song, acting a scene, etc. The creativity of TikTok is endless as much as you want it to be.

You can even edit your content, or use it like Instagram stories and record real-life moments. Like many other social media platforms, but with more fun. TikTok started in China and went/ goes by the name Douyin. Douyin is still, to this day, being used in China. TikTok and their older brother Douyin are owned by the same company ByteDance. Douyin was released to the Chinese public in 2016 with TikTok following a year later but released to places outside of China.

It was not yet the worldwide app that it is today. However, in August 2018 TikTok merged with a popular music app called Musical.ly. And this was what helped push TikTok into the rest of the world as well as becoming mainstream. TikTok and Musical.ly share a few features with lip-syncing to popular, and famous songs being the most popular ones. Nowadays, there are millions of TikTok users on the TikTok app every minute of every day.

It is one of the most used mobile apps for both Android and Apple iPhone/iPad users. Even the Samsung Galaxy can get the app. Due to this surplus of users, it can mean that there can be some creeps on the app. From sliding into your DMs (direct messages) to making uncalled-for comments on your posts, you would want to know how to TikTok block them. And they will never know.

Why Would You Want a Following On TikTok?

A big TikTok following can bring a lot of benefits if you play your cards right. You would be able to interact with and speak to many people, certainly so on lives. And, if your following is big enough you would be able to make some money off the apps themselves. As well as through sponsorships, partnerships, etc. Plus, having a following, no matter the size, could motivate you to keep posting as well as creating content.

It is a dopamine rush when people post online. This means that their work is getting out there, but also that our brains are releasing the pleasure chemical making us feel good. But, this can lead to social media addiction which is something you must watch out for.

How Do You Block Someone On TikTok?

Blocking someone on TikTok is not a difficult thing to do once you decide it is the best thing for you. However, it will require you to go to their TikTok profile. Therefore, you would have to pay attention to what their TikTok username is. And use the search bar, messages, or comments to find them. Once you find the username of the person you want to block, you go to the particular user’s profile. When you are there you press on the horizontal three-dots icon that is in the top-right corner of the screen.

You then tap “Block” which is at the bottom of the screen with a circle and a line going through it as its icon. TikTok will ask you to confirm and you do. And, now you can go back to your TikTok account in peace.

The blocking feature on TikTok is different from the other apps in that when the person is blocked you can no longer see their comments, likes, etc. As well, you will not be able to view this user’s videos at all not even on #ForYouPage. Nor will you find them on the app even when you type in their username. They are gone from your TikTok life.

Why Would You Want to Block Users?

As we have mentioned there can be a lot of creeps as well as bullies online. TikTok should be a fun place to be on, and not one that causes damage to your mental health. There are only so many times that you can see uncalled-for comments or receive creepy DMs before you are totally drained of the app. However, if you are feeling threatened by the user, such as them sending you serious death threats or making another profile to stalk you again. Then it would be better to also report users.

You do this by following the step above, going to their profile, pressing the three dots but instead of pressing on “Block” to press on “Report”. A strong suggestion would be that you screenshot the reasoning behind why you want them to be reported. The latter should be done in extreme cases where there is no other option. The last thing you want to do while you are watching TikTok videos is to have someone at the back of your mind making you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in your digital space.

The block option can be used if they are not a threat, and they are just annoying or spammy even. But…there could be a possibility that it was all a misunderstanding, etc. Or, on the much lighter side, you blocked someone as a joke and now want to unblock them. Well, since you can no longer find them on the app, what do you do?

From there you will see “blocked accounts” close to the bottom of the list.

How to Bulk Block

Instead of just blocking them one at a time you can ,block in bulk. To do this you would have to go to your comments and long press on the user’s comment that you want to block. Also, you can tap on the pencil icon in the top left corner to get to options. When you are at the options, you then tap on “manage multiple comments.”

disable block icon

This means that you can now select the usernames you want to block. It can go up to 100 comments, therefore, 100 users. When you have decided who you want to block and you found their username in the comment section, you tap “more.” Then you look for “Block accounts” and press it. This will do as the name implies, and block all the users you no longer want to see in your comment section. You would need a big following to want to block 100 users.

Benefits of Blocking

Blocking users that do not make you feel good can be a great thing. Not only to your mental health, but also your creativity, and the fun factor. Without certain users ruining your posting day or bringing down your mood, you would be able to enjoy the app to its fullest. As well as get the creative juices flowing a lot better. This is because you know that you will not see the comments from users that are of no help to you. Out of sight out of mind as the old saying goes.

Before You Block

However, before you go on a blocking spree, you need to ask yourself: should you do it? While you can, but do you need to. Sometimes comments can come across as being unnecessary or bad depending on your day or mood. And they are actually not. For example, you have had a bad day, and you went to edit and create an original TikTok video and posted it. You then wait for a bit and check the comments. Some of the comments could come across as bad and mean, but they are actually constructive criticism.

Constructive criticism is necessary for a content creator to grow and improve their work. You should be lucky you are getting any since they are quite rare to come by. People who give constructive criticism are doing it in an attempt to help the poster make better content. But, back to the point, these can come across as negative due to your bad day and low mindset. Therefore, before you run along and block everyone, think: are they trying to help you, or are they being mean and unnecessary?

You may have to sleep on it or put your phone down to clear your head. If you see it is the latter and it is by the same username, then you may want to opt to block them. This is because they will most likely never stop.

If you see that you are getting constructive criticism, then do not block them. While people do not know they are blocked, it also means that you cannot see the comments. If you cannot read helpful comments, then how would you improve?

And how would you interact with them to grow your following? Therefore, think before you block and even sleep on it. Why go through the effort of unblocking if you did not have to in the first place? That being said, if they are bots then block them. Bots are annoying, pointless, and they do not make any sense. You can check out tiny YouTubers to get an idea of how annoying they are. They even appear on well-known celebrities’ profiles.

Blocking someone on TikTok should not be taken too lightly. If the person is a genuine threat it is better to screenshot and report so that the right people can handle them. If certain people are annoying but harmless, you may still want to block them if they do not add anything to your content in terms of feedback, support, advice, jokes, etc.

Do not block them if they are giving constructive criticism since this can help you improve your content a lot.

And remember to think before you block in case you do not make an error. You can always unblock them but you may have missed some important advice by that time. Also, always block bots.
